Yochai Benkler insists that in the internet based society, we have to raise human cooperation which is called Penguin. He took the term of Leviathan that humans are fundamentally and universally selfish. Penguin is the symbol of Linux that is expressed by the view that sees human beings as fundamentally capable of compassion, morality, cooperation, and generosity. If we wish to build cooperative society, we need to build cooperative systems(Chap 10).

  • Communication is very important.
  • We have to try Framing, fit, and authenticity .
  • We should have empathy and solidarity beyond ourselves.
  • Constructing moral systems such as fairness, morality, and social norms.
  • Reward and punishment can, in some instances, be effective in getting people to cooperate.
  • Reputation, transparency, and reciprocity are enormously valuable.
  • Building for diversity is the best way to maximize contributions and cooperation.

Net Smart / Rheingold

Rheingold, in this book, insists that if all of us can use collective intelligence, we can be smarter than any of us. If we want to deploy the collaboration skills, we understand four worth notions(149).

  • Attention is a fundamental building block of social cooperation, which requires paying attention to each other
  • Humans are supercooperators because we’ve learned how to devise new tools and methods to overcome social dilemmas.
  • Innovative social institutions continually coevolve together with communication media.
  • Reciprocating cooperation, punishing noncooperators, and signaling a willingness to cooperate are useful.

Rheingold use the definition of Arthur Himmelman who detailed the differences between networking, coordination, cooperation, and collaboration(153).

  • Networking is the simplest, withe the least risk and commitment such as commenting on a blog.
  • Coordination means that all involved parties share information and agree to modify their activities for mutual benefit.
  • Cooperation is exchanging information, modifying activities, and sharing resources for mutual benefit and to achieve a common purpose.
  • Collaboration is the most purposeful means of collective action. It uses networking, coordination, and cooperation as building blocks. Collaborators share common goals and responsibility.

We live in a media revolution period that cannot be comparing with former media forms. Former media forms cannot help us to make group forming. If 15 people come together they can form 105 connections. Comparing with past times, now we can do everything faster than before the power of collectivity. In this book, Clay Shirky insists that group coordination can be pressed into service for political means, because the freedom to act in a group is inherently political(187). Although increase on various forms of freedom in new media culture may cause the social problems, we have to pursue the value of freedom because freedom is the right thing to want for society.

Nowadays, so many Christians use social media. This special book let us broaden knowledge about social media. As if it is inconceivable that fish can live without water, people living in the modern society can’t live without using social media. Social media became crucial method of communication each other. In this book, authors introduce not only various social media but also method of using for ministry to us. Elizabeth described life in the Digital Reformation as organized around four core practices she calls a “LACE”(Chap 4):

  • Listening-  taking time to get to know people in social networks
  • Attending-  noticing and being present to the experiences and interests of others.
  • Connecting-  reaching out to others in diverse communities.
  • Engaging-  building relationships by sharing content, collaborating, and connecting people to others.

The Christian Imagination / Willie James Jennings

In Jennings’ book, Olaudah Equiano was born in 1745 in southeastern Nigeria. Equiano was captured at a young age by ruthless slavers. He was forced to march the long journey to the sea, compelled to live aboard British vessels, in the colonies. The child will be born again, born of a new set of relations he cannot easily grasp. He can only draw on the vision of a world of spirits to capture through his imagination what he cannot understand through their language(175). Ironically in the midst of all this severe circumstances, hearing gospel from ruthless Christian slavers he became a Christian. Christians need to figure out that dominant culture is right or not, with using critical imagination.

The story about someone.

When he was 30 years old, He started his public work toward poor and needy people. He did a lot of miracles that are curing people and driving out demon from demon-possessed people. He insisted that he is the Messiah who deliver people from their sin and also he insisted that He is son of God. Authorities of Israel feared his fame and they persecuted him on the cross.
